Track the sentiment of your coverage

Sentiment, track, favourable, opinion, positive, neutral, negative

Written by David Whitner

Sentiment tagging helps you record the overall tone of your coverage. Its part of CoverageBook’s wider analysis features. Using sentiment alongside coverage type and brand prominence can help you show whether coverage was favourable or not, but also what kind of coverage it was and how central the brand was to the story.

Instead of tracking this data in a spreadsheet, you can add a sentiment tag to your coverage. This makes it easier to filter reports, compare campaigns and export cleaner data on how your coverage landed.

How do I add sentiment to my coverage?

When you're editing coverage in a report, click on the sentiment edit button.

Choose whether the overall tone of the coverage is positive, neutral or negative, and hit save to add it to the clip.

  • Positive - Clear, favourable tone toward the brand or topic

  • Neutral - Factual or balanced tone, without clear paise or criticism

  • Negative - Unfavourable, critical or harmful tone

You'll see a sentiment label showing on the clip

Can I hide the Sentiment labels from showing in the reports I share?

Yes, if you prefer not to show this data when sharing a report, you can hide it. Go to the Overview tab and click the settings menu.

Click the toggle to hide sentiment.

You can still view the sentiment tags when editing the report in your account, and they'll show in the CSV export and in your coverage vault filters so you can use those for deeper analysis.

Can I filter my coverage by sentiment and track it over time?

Yes! Head to the coverage vault by clicking on the coverage tab in the top left or your main menu.

You'll now see a list of all your coverage in one place, and you can use the filters on the left to search for clips with positive, neutral and negative sentiment. You can also filter by folder, report, and over a date range.

When you've got a filtered list of results, you can create a new report just with those clips in, or add them to existing reports. You can also export the data to CSV for further analysis (available on Silver and above plans).

Can I export sentiment data to a spreadsheet?

Yes. If you click on the share page of any report in your account there's also the option to export to CSV. You'll find a sentiment column in the CSV.
